The city of Anderson is named after Chief William Anderson, whose Indian name was Kikthawenund, meaning “making a noise” or “causing to crack.” Early settlers referred to the area as Anderson Town, while the Moravian missionaries called it “The Heathen Town Four Miles Away.” It later became Anderstown before the Indiana State Legislature shortened the name to Anderson in 1844. In the spring of 1887, natural gas was discovered in the city. Several industries came to the area, leading to a population explosion. Anderson soon became a “factory town,” with General Motors building plants throughout the city. The success of the automobile factories attracted entrepreneurs and made Anderson the economic center of Madison County. From the 1940s through the 1970s, downtown Anderson had its share of family-owned businesses as well as national chain stores like J.C. Penney, Sears & Roebuck, and Montgomery Ward. Today, it remains filled with a rich heritage and continues to grow in a new economic market.

Anderson Images of America David Humphrey 9781467111744 Books Reviews

  • Great book! Great price!
  • Brought back many fond memories of my childhood home.
  • The book is very good on the pictorial description of Anderson. I did notice two possible errors with captions, but that is very good for a book of this type.
  • I have enjoyed the book very much; however, I would have enjoyed pictures and comments of more recent times. The book is definitely good though.
  • I was excited (and surprised) to find this book originally at The Barnes & Noble in Noblesville, IN last weekend (but buy it from if you have a Prime membership-it's cheaper than at B & N). I think Mr. Humphries did a nice job mixing up old and newer photos. Anderson was once a proud town, and it was great to remember that with these pictures.

I wish I'd known he was doing it because I've got some great old photos of the foundry my dad and his brothers ran (and his father and grandfather before him) and pics from St. Mary's School that date back to the 20s.

If you're from Anderson, Indiana originally and enjoy history, you'll enjoy this.
