Bigger Leaner Stronger The Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body Michael Matthews 9781938895302 Books Reviews

  • I'm giving this book three stars because I want to be fair, here. The information contained within, if you can stomach the endless sales pitch, is useful. If you follow his workout plans, nutritional advice, etc, I'm sure you'll achieve the results you're looking for.

That being said, I'm shocked I got through the introduction without closing out of the book and hitting "Remove From Device". It is basically a 300-page infomercial. When I fully realized this is how the entire book was going to be, I couldn't NOT read this book in Don Lapre's voice.

Mike, buddy, pal... we bought the book. You closed the deal. Continuing to bash us over the head with your "What if I told you"'s or headlining sections promising SECRETS is just unnecessary. We're in. You have our money.

I wouldn't buy this book again. If an abridged version without all the bs was to be released, I could maybe recommend that, but until then, I'd look elsewhere.
  • I have been wanting to write this review for over a month now but I always get distracted because I start reading the negative ones and then forget why I logged in to in the first place.
I am a physician, I am 35 and I started working out at the age of 21 and I have been following this book’s recommendations since August 2017. I started out at 172 lbs with a body fat % of 16, now I am 164 lbs and Fat % of 10 being committed by about 90% ( I take 36 hours shifts once or twice a week and I will need a couple days to recover before I can work out, but my diet however is fairly committed).
Who is this book for? In my opinion, mainly for those who have no problem committing, like to exercise but never saw results because they did not know what the right things are regarding exercise and nutrition.
For beginners, this book is not enough, it is great and you should apply the concepts in it because you will maximize your gains without wasting time and effort but it won't tell you how exactly to perform the exercise itself and what the right technique is ( solution search youtube for proper X exercise form and decide which one works the best for you, another solution is to work with a personal trainer solely for the technique and not for the program).
If you are a seasoned lifter, know how to bulk and cut and get your body fat % to below 10 , then you probably do not need this book, however, you can use it as a summary of all what you know.
Regarding the style, Mike is a talented writer and a smart salesman, he will try to sell you his products but he clearly states you do not have to. You will feel tempted though because things will work for you and you will want more.
The nutrition and the work out programs are all there in the book but they are kinda dispersed and you have to do a little extra homework so you build your own, BUT IT IS ALL THERE IN THE BOOK.
Some pieces of info are too basic for me but it is probably because of my medical background, it annoyed me a little bit because I could not skip it yet I did not want to hear it.
The articles that Mike will email you almost weekly or twice weekly are simply great, mostly revisions of sections in the book ( magnified if you will) plus additional stuff.
The negative reviews are true but I do not see them as necessarily negative points, yes the info are there online for free but so scattered and you will never know what to choose on your own.
The book serves as a great educational tool that will enable you to filter what is out there, whether products, exercises nutrition or supplements.

  • Not what I was expecting. It took TEN chapters to get out of the marketing hype and overall fluff and actually start talking about nutrition or working out. He goes on about how simple it is, then he makes the workout routine chapters bounce all over the place. Talks about the "de-load week, the strength week, etc. By the time I finished reading them, I wasn't sure what to do when. It seemed lot like the advice I got from my friends at the gym back in college when they told me to warm up with 10-15 easy reps then lift three sets heavy at 3-6 reps But these are the same uninformed idiots that spread incorrect 'Broscience" in the gym that I am supposed to not listen to. So I was looking forward to the "free" bonus report titled "The Year One Challenge" with a detailed 12 months workout routine that was listed in the table to contents and listed in a separate chapter with a website address to find it. I figured this would tie it all together. When I went to the website, I got a security error and was unable to get on it. Then I noticed that the 'free' report I was supposed to be able to get was listed on for $13.32!! Well, then I went to the authors other website and there is NOTHING free on that site. ALL MARKETING, ALL HYPE, all trying to get your money. You got my money when I bought your book, where is my 'free' bonus report and workout guide?
He also spends a lot of pages hawking his workouts and trashing every other workout, then in the end, I wasn't really sure what his workout was. He trashes the supplement industry, then he tries to sell you his own supplements - things like pre-workout drinks, fat burners and sleep aids. His protein powder alone is $40 for two pounds (I get it a comparable product on-line for $26 for two pounds). The author talks on and on about how people just want to make money off of you then he does the same thing.
Finally - the title says the "Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Make Body", then he recommends several other books he has written. If it is so simple, why can't it be in one book? One of the books is a cookbook where he poses cooking with no shirt on. How can I take this so called expert seriously?
I recommend people go to the website "A Workout Routine" and buy their supplements from "Truenutrition.com". I bought this book thinking it would give me more info or help more than those sources - it doesn't. Just another person trying to make money.
